Dental Awareness Month!

Greetings from Dr.
Burmeister and all the staff at Livingston Animal Hospital!

Does your pet have a case of bad breath? Bad breath in pets is not normal and is the most commonly noticed sign of dental disease! 85% of dogs and cats will have some level of dental disease by the age of two!

Here’s a great video that explains everything you need to know about “Dental Disease”

Dental disease has an impact on every aspect of your fur baby’s health. While pets may still continue to chew normally with an underlying dental problem, buildup of plaque and tartar can lead to serious infections. Any infection in the mouth can quickly travel through the blood to the entire body, affecting vital organ systems. Uncontrolled dental disease and gingivitis has been associated with detrimental changes to the heart, liver and kidneys. Regular dental exams and cleanings are very important to help your furry family members live long and happy lives!

A Veterinary Dental Assessment and Cleaning is an important step to take if your pet has Dental Disease. During a dental assessment your pets’ teeth will be cleaned and polished by a Registered Veterinary Technician, then each tooth will be individually inspected by Dr. Burmeister and the gums probed. If any abnormalities are found with an individual tooth, a digital radiograph will be taken so that Dr. Burmeister can evaluate the root of the tooth below the gum line. All of this will be done while your pet is safely under general anesthesia so they won’t feel any pain or anxiety.
